The Red Bulls have traded defender Chris Leitch to the San Jose Earthquakes for allocation money and an international slot.

“This move gives us more roster flexibility as we prepare for the start of the MLS season,” Red Bulls sporting director Jeff Agoos said yesterday. “Chris has been a consummate professional during his time in New York and we wish him the best of luck in San Jose.”

Leitch played in 17 games last season and had two assists. The 29-year-old also started all four playoff games in the team’s run to the MLS Cup Final.

Leitch has played regular season games for the Red Bulls and the Columbus Crew.
