This is why you should never bring your own cannon to a football game.

A referee at a Maine college football game on Saturday was hit in the face by a cannon blast, NewsCenter Maine reported. Video of the incident shows a loud bang, a large puff of smoke and the referee grabbing his face and falling to the ground during the homecoming game for Maine Maritime Academy against Massachusetts Maritime. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office told the website that an alumnus brought his own cannon to the game and a “wad” of black powder shot out and hit the referee. The school does use its own cannon, but uses blank shotgun shells.

“During the second half of the contest, Maine Maritime Academy scored a touchdown, after which a cannon, owned and operated by an alumnus, was fired from outside the fence behind the end zone. One of the game officials was proceeding along the end line when the cannon was fired and was struck by packing material from the cannon. The Academy’s president has directed that these devices will no longer be permitted on campus for future events,” the school’s director of college relations, Jennifer DeJoy, said in a statement to the outlet.

It is possible the alumnus could face criminal charges once the investigation by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is completed.
