The Post reported last month that GK Faryd Mondragon was leaving FC Koeln to come to MLS; but we also said that _ despite his friendship with Juan Pablo Angel and the German media linking him with Red Bull _ that he wasn’t coming to New York, but most likely Philadelphia. Now Kicker is reporting that he is indeed headed for the Union.

After losing his starting job over a disagreement with former coach Zvonimir Soldo, the 39-year-old Colombian _ who is the Bundesliga’s oldest player _ made a deal with ex-Koeln GM Michael Meier that allows him to leave on a free transfer in the winter break. Like we pointed out on Nov. 24, he’ll help a keeper-starved Union team that got horrible performances from Chris Seitz and Brad Knighton.

Angel, the all-time leading scorer in New York history, is godfather to Mondragon’s son. That, and the fact the Colombian was in town recently, likely led to initial speculation that he would be joining the Red Bulls. Instead, he’ll be playing just down the New Jersey Turnpike.
