If Pedro Martinez returns in 2010, don’t expect it to be with the Phillies.

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. told MLB.com that Martinez’s lack of preparation would likely prevent them from signing him again. Amaro recently ran into Martinez’s agent, Fernando Cuza, who told the GM that Martinez has yet to throw off a mound. That’s a difference from last year when Martinez pitched in the World Baseball Classic and then continued to work out before the Phillies signed him in July.

“They’re different circumstances,” Amaro told the website. “He had thrown all the way up until now. He hasn’t gotten on a mound. Only Pedro could say when he’d be ready. I’m sure he knows, but I couldn’t tell you.”

Martinez went 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA in nine regular season starts and then threw seven shutout innings in a Phillies loss to the Dodgers in the NLCS. But Martinez lost both Games 2 and 6 to the Yankees in the World Series.
