REVERSING THE CURSE
Back in 1978, the Yankees stormed from 14 games behind to shock the Red Sox and win the AL East. Here in 2004, the Red Sox are trying to turn the tables, climbing from 10½ out one month ago to force a showdown series at Yankee Stadium this weekend.

July 17, 1978
Royals beat Yankees, 9-7, who drop 14 games behind Sox. Yanks are 47-42; Billy Martin is fired eight days later.
July 23, 1978
Yanks sweep White Sox, 3-1, for fifth straight win, shave deficit to 10. They’re in third place.
Aug. 3, 1978
Boston sweeps two-game series in Bronx with 8-1 win to put lead at 8½. After 1:29 rain delay, game called in middle of 7th. Yanks drop to fourth.
Aug. 31, 1978
Yanks end month with seventh straight victory, 6-2 over O’s, an in second place. Idle Boston leads by 6½.
Sept. 7, 1978
Four-game Boston Massacre begins with Sox clinging to four-game lead. Yankees lead 12-0 after four and win 15-3.
Sept. 8, 1978
Another Yankees rout, 13-2. Lead shaved to two games as rookie Jim Beattie shines.
Sept. 9, 1978
Yankees win, 7-0, Ron Guidry improves to 21-2, lead shaved to one.
Sept. 10, 1978
Yankees win, 7-4, to tie for first.
Sept. 13, 1978
Yanks take over first by ½ game, beating Detroit, 7-3. Boston falls, 2-1, to Indians.
Sept. 16, 1978
Yanks beat Boston, 3-2, for ninth win in 10, open up 3½-game lead.
Sept. 22, 1978
Boston’s 5-4 loss to Toronto puts Sox two back with eight to play.
Oct. 1, 1978
Sox win eighth straight on final day of season. Yanks’ 9-2 loss to Cleveland forces playoff.
Oct. 2, 1978
Bucky Dent smashes three-run homer to help Yanks to a 5-4 victory in one-game playoff.
