Run with Pack back vs. Jags
There has been no ground more difficult to conquer this fantasy season than the ground game. Between injuries, poor production and bye weeks, running back has been a black hole on many rosters.
You have guys who are out, or likely out: DeMarco Murray, Maurice Jones-Drew, Cedric Benson, Beanie Wells, Ryan Williams.
You have guys who are questionable: Trent Richardson, Rashard Mendenhall, Felix Jones, Donald Brown.
The poor performance of others mean you would rather stash them on the bench: DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Ben Tate, Mark Ingram, Mikel Leshoure.
And, of course, there are byes: Fred Jackson, C.J. Spiller, Ray Rice, Arian Foster, BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
The waiver wire hasn’t been enormously helpful this season. The one memorable fill-in performance was Giants RB Andre Brown in Week 3 vs. the Panthers.
Jaguars RB Rashad Jennings was the hot pickup this week, with starter Jones-Drew sidelined with a foot injury. But there may be better a one-week wonder available. The Jaguars have given up more than 100 yards in four of six games and six rushing TDs on the season — though five came in the first two weeks.
The Jaguars defense is a sieve. And though they are almost as bad against the pass (19th) as they are the run (25th), expect the Packers to jump out to a comfortable lead — especially with Jones-Drew out and starting QB Blaine Gabbert (shoulder) questionable.
That means the Packers should be in position to run the ball more, which is good for Green. It also means the Jaguars will have to go to the air, which is bad for Jennings.
BIG WEEKS
Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Titans, vs. Colts
The Tennessee offense has been efficient the past two weeks with Hasselbeck under center. Indy has given up at least one passing TD every week, including multiple scores in five of six games.
Vick Ballard, RB, Colts, at Titans
Got a heavy dose last week, and should again, with starter Donald Brown (knee) questionable. Titans have given up 97 yards or more in six of seven games and at least one rushing score five times.
Brandon Gibson, WR, Rams, vs. Patriots
Rams have “home” game in London, but Patriots provide little resistance in air wherever they play, though they have been better at home. With Danny Amendola (shoulder) on the mend, Gibson is QB Sam Bradford’s go-to guy.
Martellus Bennett, TE, Giants, at Cowboys
Caught four passes for 40 yards and a score against his former team in Week 1. With Hakeem Nicks back to divert some attention, Bennett should have better opportunity to get open.
SMALL WEAKS
Cam Newton, QB, Panthers, at Bears
Mentally delicate QB takes team in turmoil, with inferior talent, on road against defense that has picked off 14 and given up just six passing TDs.
Steven Jackson, RB, Rams, vs. Patriots
Disappointing season likely to continue. Rams could be playing catch-up much of the day — meaning more pass, less run. Rookie backfield mate Daryl Richardson has been more effective and is cutting into Jackson’s carries opportunities.
Brian Hartline,WR, Dolphins, at Jets
In two games since 12-catch, 253-yard breakout performance vs. Cardinals, Hartline has four catches for 59 yards and no TDs, including zero targets in Week 6 vs. the Rams. Jets defense stingiest against opposing fantasy WRs.
Vernon Davis, TE, 49ers, at Cardinals
Arizona has been stout recently against TEs. In the past two weeks, held Buffalo’s Scott Chandler and Minnesota’s Kyle Rudolph to one catch for 4 yards — total.
The Decision
Drew Loftis and Anthony Sulla-Heffinger tell you who you should start:
ANDREW LUCK VS. MATTHEW STAFFORD
Drew: Luck — Faces a Titans defense that has surrendered multiple passing TDs in six of seven games — including three last week to Buffalo’s Ryan Fitzpatrick (Thanks, Titans) — and has offset 16 passing TDs allowed with just five picks. Going to Tennessee well again. If I’m lucky, maybe I even get a rushing TD (Luck had two last week).
Anthony: Stafford — Rookie QB, on the road, in a division game or former 5,000-yard passer, at home, with Calvin Johnson? Seems like a pretty easy decision to make, even with how awful Tennessee’s passing defense has been. Stafford hasn’t been great by any measure this season, but against a Seattle secondary that sits in the middle of the pack, he could turn it around this week.
Last week:Drew 19 (Fitzpatrick — 225 pass yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 23 rush yards, 1 fumble lost), Anthony 15 (Cam Newton — 233 pass yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 64 rush yards, 1 fumble lost)
Season: Drew leads, 5-1-1
