Rutgers pulled off a huge recruiting surprise — literally — today when the Scarlet Knights landed Hoboken DT Isaac Holmes.

The four-star behemoth is one of New Jersey’s top prospects, is listed at anywhere from 285-315 pounds, and is considered a coup for Rutgers. Holmes took an official visit to national champion Florida the weekend they were thrashing Miami, and was widely expected to choose between Pittsburgh and Maryland. He didn’t visit Rutgers until Jan. 23, but chose the Scarlet Knights, according to rivals.com.

He’s rated New Jersey’s third-best player and the country’s No. 21 defensive tackle by rivals.com, the 27th-best DT by ESPN.com. Holmes can make his commitment official Wednesday on National Letter of Intent Signing Day.
