Jonathan Mitchell had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Rutgers to its first Big East win, an 85-72 decision over Providence on Saturday night.

Austin Johnson scored a season-high 16 off the bench, Gilvydas Biruta added 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting and Dane Miller contributed 12 points as the Scarlet Knights (10-5, 1-2) snapped a seven-game losing streak to Providence (11-6, 0-4) dating back to the 2004-05 season.

James Beatty hit consecutive 3-pointers to ignite an 8-0 run to start the second half, and Rutgers never trailed over the final 18 minutes.

With Providence making just two field goals, the Scarlet Knights outscored the Friars 19-10 over the first 8 minutes of the second half.

Marshon Brooks scored 29 to lead the Friars, who shot 25 percent (7 for 28) in the second half en route to their fourth straight loss.
