Sweetnorthernsaint, seventh as a surprising 5-1 favorite in Ky. Derby, who hasn’t raced since finishing second in Preakness, returns to the races next Thursday in an allowance at Laurel Park.

Purse has been increased to $250,000 for the Breeders’ Cup Grand National Steeplechase on SatUrday Oct. 28 at Far Hills, N.J. at two-and-five-eighths miles over 14 fences. McDynamo, winner of the last three BC Steeplechases, will go for fourth in row.

5TH RACE – Starting gate woes continue as Smash ‘Em Sammy, 3-1, broke through the gate before start, ran off but was quickly collared by outrider, and 8-1 Landofopportunity also broke through. Both NY-bred 2-year-olds were reloaded, promptly hooked up in speed duel, joined outside by 3-5 favorite Chief’s Lake, in hand under John Velazquez, who took command turning for home.
