Knick GM Scott Layden is seriously considering claiming the released Hornet small forward Lee Nailon off the waiver wire, according to sources.

And the Knicks will have first crack at claiming the athletic, up-and-coming Nailon because of their recently granted $4.5 million injury exception.

If Layden today claims the 6-foot-9 Nailon, who started 41 games last season, it would put the Knicks in better position to trade Latrell Sprewell.

Because Nailon makes more than the minimum at $1 million with bonuses, only five teams will be eligible to claim Nailon off the waiver wire. The teams include the Knicks, Bucks, Toronto, Portland and Orlando.

Layden will be first in line because the Knicks had the worst record of the five. Only a team under the cap or with a trade or injury exception can claim Nailon’s salary.
