TORONTO – Jason Giambi isn’t overly worried – but the longest hitting slump of his career is weighing on his mind.
“I am not ready to kill anybody yet,” Giambi said after going 0-for-4 in yesterday’s 8-1 loss to the Blue Jays. “I am just trying to hit the ball hard, but I am having a tough time right now. I can’t explain it.”
Giambi is 0 for his last 24, two at-bats longer than the 0-for-22 funk he was in during the 1996 season with the A’s. Worse, he is 1-for-10 (.100) with runners in scoring position and has driven in three runs since Aug. 14. His last home run was Aug. 16.
Giambi has been bothered by physical problems all year. An eye infection forced him to hit in April and May with blurred vision. His left knee is likely headed for postseason surgery. He has been hit several times on the hands and shoulders. He hasn’t gotten a hit since being hit on the right hand Aug. 25.
“You have to play through things,” Giambi said. “You have to try and get good at-bats.”
Manager Joe Torre said Giambi needs a flare single to get him going. Giambi would take it but has designs on something better.
“One hard-hit ball that goes through,” said Giambi, whose batting average has slipped to .251. “I just have to keep plugging away.”
