“Game of Thrones” is going from coffee cup scandals to teacup brouhahas.

Soccer star Alex Morgan went on the defensive Friday, saying her tea-sipping gesture during Team USA’s win over England in the World Cup was actually a misunderstood homage to “Game of Thrones” actress Sophie Turner.

Morgan’s miming appeared to mock England after scoring the game’s final goal Tuesday, but she said it was a nod to the British actress, who signs off Instagram messages with the phrase, “And that’s the tea” — meaning that’s the “news” — before sipping a beverage.

“My celebration was actually more about ‘that’s the tea’ which is telling a story, spreading news. Sophie Turner does it quite often, she’s one of my favorite actresses. So it wasn’t a hit to England in any way,” Morgan told reporters in France.

Morgan said the gesture was meant to tell a story about her team fighting back against everything opponents threw at them, and also called the firestorm the move ignited a sexist “double standard.”

Turner responded on Instagram by saying she’s “honored” Morgan thought of her.

“And all those people that are hating on you are probably sitting at home — millennials drinking kombucha. I’m really f–king proud of you, Alex Morgan, congratulations on your win, and that’s the motherf–king tea,” the actress said.

In May, “Game of Thrones” fans spotted a to-go coffee cup left on a table during a scene of the medieval era-set show, which kicked off a social media frenzy.
