Blue is the color, football is the game, and now Chelsea can add FIFA Club World Cup champion to its name. 

Chelsea stunned European champion Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final in a 3-0 victory, capping the first year of the newly formatted tournament in front of a crowd of 81,118 at MetLife Stadium. 

The largely pro-Chelsea crowd erupted when the game ended and the club’s signature “Blue is the Colour” song blared throughout the stadium. 

The surprise victory came amid a dominant run by PSG through the tournament, which included wins over Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid on its way to the final. But it was the foot of star Cole Palmer that gave Chelsea the lead and breakout star João Pedro who scored his third goal of the tournament to put the game away before the first half even came to an end. 

“To score the goals was a great feeling,” Palmer said. “But I think the way the team showed fire, and obviously the gaffer’s game plan was spot-on.” 

PSG, a club Chelsea hadn’t played in a competitive match since 2016, had been the odds-on favorite to win Sunday’s showdown in East Rutherford, but it was Chelsea that came out firing on all cylinders right from the jump. 

Palmer came within inches of scoring in the eighth minute when his shot sailed just to the right of the post, but he redeemed himself with an impressive goal in the 22nd minute, finessing the ball past PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into the corner of the net. 

In the 30th minute, Palmer was the recipient of a good lead pass and then showed off why he’s one of the club’s best players, moving the ball to the top of the box to score in the same spot as his first goal. 

Pedro extended the Chelsea lead to three just before halftime when he chipped the ball past Donnarumma from in front of the net after Palmer helped set up the play with a crisp pass up to Pedro in the box.

“We won the game in the first 10 minutes,” Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said. “We showed we were here to give it our all. You can give a detailed plan to your players, but they need to execute it.” 

Maresca also described PSG as the “best in the world” and the win is something the club should be “proud” of. 

The match featured plenty of chippiness as PSG midfielder João Neves was given a red card for pulling the hair of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella in the second half. After the game, there was a brief shoving match, which included PSG coach Luis Enrique pushing Pedro. 

The reformatted tournament was a bit of an unknown as to how it would be received by fans and the teams, but FIFA president Gianni Infantino hailed it as a success the day before the final in a news conference at Trump Tower. 

And Maresca predicted that it could one day rival some of club soccer’s biggest tournaments. 

“This competition will become just as important or even more important than the Champions League,” Maresca said. “This competition, uniting all the best clubs around the world, will become more important than the Champions League.” 

The Club World Cup provided a window into what’s to come next summer, when the World Cup comes to the United States, Canada and Mexico. Sunday’s final featured an American-style halftime show, which included J Balvin, Doja Cat and a surprise appearance by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. 

The final game provided a lively atmosphere for most of the afternoon and a star-studded guest list of VIPs in the stands that included President Donald Trump. The president presented the championship trophy and was on stage with Chelsea when the Blues hoisted it in celebration.
