Christian Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest when he collapsed during Denmark’s European Championship match on Saturday, team doctor Morten Boesen said, adding that before the 29-year-old was resuscitated, “he was gone.”

“We got him back after one defib. That’s quite fast,” Boesen said Sunday.

Eriksen, who received CPR from Boesen on the field, is in stable condition at a hospital in Copenhagen and even shared a message with his coach and teammates after the horrifying episode.

The midfielder spoke to Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand on video and asked about how his teammates were doing, which Hjulmand said was “typical Christian.” Hjulmand added it was “good to see him smile.”

Denmark’s match with Finland was suspended as Eriksen’s teammates were distraught over what transpired. Eriksen was taken off on a stretcher.

After Eriksen was reported conscious and stable, the game resumed, with Finland winning 1-0.
