Third-seeded North Carolina defeated unseeded Fordham, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA men’s soccer tournament on Saturday in Cary, N.C. — ending the deepest NCAA run by a Rams team in any sport.

They did not go quietly.

After UNC forward Zach Wright scored in the 60th minute, Fordham’s Jannik Loebe quickly answered. Loebe — a senior midfielder from Kierspe, Germany and the team-leader in goals (9) — put one in the back of the net just two minutes later to knot the score at 1-1.

But a header from North Carolina’s Alan Winn, assisted by Wright and Cam Lindley, in the 80th minutes proved to be the winner.

Fordham’s soccer program had never won an NCAA Tournament game prior to this year. They won three on their way to the Elite Eight, beating St. Francis of Brooklyn, Virginia and Duke.
