Lionel Messi clinched the all-time World Cup goals record on Monday against Austria. He now has five goals through two matches after putting up a hat trick in the opening match.
Next up, Argentina will face Jordan in their third and final Group J match of the 2026 tournament as they look to win their second straight World Cup. They would be the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back titles, and they have 16 players returning from the 2022 champion squad.
On the other hand, Jordan’s first-ever World Cup began with a 3-1 loss to Austria on June 17 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
Their first World Cup goal was scored by Ali Olwan in the 50th minute before Yazan Al-Arab’s own goal gave Austria back a lead they’d hold through the remainder of the match. Jordan was eliminated from the tournament on Monday after losing their second group stage match to Algeria.
