The expected signing of Andrea Pirlo isn’t the end of New York City FC’s summer shopping spree.
Part of the big-spending MLS expansion team’s grand plan always was to leave enough cap space and available funds to add five or six players, and they will have room even after inking the Italian star.
Sources told The Post — contrary to a report in Italian publication La Stampa — Pirlo won’t wait until the winter, but should be available to NYCFC starting on July 12.
Thanks to some shrewd roster-building by coach Jason Kreis and sporting director Claudio Reyna, NYCFC also will extend Shay Facey’s loan through the rest of the year and can potentially add another player.
The July 12 game with Toronto FC will be the most expensive game in MLS history. Toronto has Sebastian Giovinco, Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley, each making at least $6 million annually, while the game could mark the NYCFC debuts of Pirlo and Frank Lampard. David Villa and Lampard each make $6 million, and Pirlo is expected to be in the same ballpark. Pirlo’s pending addition would make NYCFC the highest-salaried club in MLS history.
NYCFC already announced the signing of veteran Athletic Bilbao right back/midfielder Andoni Iraola on a free transfer and Manchester youth product Jose Angel Tasende – known as Angelino – on a loan. A source said NYCFC has cap space to add at least one player in the $200,000-$300,000 range.
The 33-year-old Iraola made 510 appearances for Bilbao over the past dozen seasons and has appeared for Spain’s national team, but signed a comparatively modest contract to come to New York.
Angelino turned down a chance to go on loan to a team in the Champions League to come to New York and reunite with Facey, a fellow Manchester City loanee. Angelino, who opted to join Manchester City over Real Madrid and Barcelona back in 2013, starred for Man City’s Elite Development Squad, scoring a hat trick over Leicester City.
Facey has gotten his footing in New York. He played a great game at right back Saturday to shut down Giovinco in a 2-0 victory over Toronto.
“I know Shay Facey is doing really well for the team and loving the experience,’’ Angelino said when he signed. “The atmosphere at Yankee Stadium seems amazing, so I’m really looking forward to playing in front of our supporters.’’
