Long Island’s Pele is going to Columbus.

The Red Bulls initially lost forward and fan-favorite Mike Grella to the Colorado Rapids in Stage 1 of Friday’s Re-Entry Draft before Colorado flipped him back east to the Crew in exchange for a second-round draft pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, the Red Bulls announced Friday.

“Mike is a fierce competitor and the type of guy who gives everything for his teammates,” said head coach Jesse Marsch in a statement. “He played a big role for us the past few years and helped establish who we are as a team. I’m grateful to have had Mike as a player and wish him and his family nothing but the best.”

Grella, 30, played 73 regular season matches with the Red Bulls since joining the club in 2015. He notched 16 goals and 13 assists in that span, but made just eight appearances in 2017 before he was ruled out for the season to undergo knee surgery.

The Red Bulls declined Grella’s contract in November which left him exposed to both Los Angeles FC’s Expansion Draft and the Re-Entry Draft.

“On behalf of everyone at the New York Red Bulls, I’d like to thank Mike for his service to the club,” Sporting Director Denis Hamlett said. “He had many great moments here and was an excellent guy in our locker room. We wish Mike and his family all the best as he continues his career.”
