DONETSK, Ukraine — Defending champion Spain beat France 2-0 in a Euro 2012 quarterfinal Saturday played in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Spain, which won the tournament in 2008, will play Portugal in the 2012 tournament’s first semifinal Wednesday.

The remaining quarterfinal will be played Sunday, when England faces Italy. The winner of that game will play Germany Thursday.

In Saturday’s match, Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso scored with a header in the 19th minute and converted a penalty kick in second-half added time.
