We all remember what April sounded like, and May, all the way to the brink of June. We remember the Garden — what it looked like, what it felt like, what it sounded like. We remember the way the Knicks turned Manhattan into a big ol’ college town, the streets temporarily renamed for players, the civic mood rising and falling based on the previous night’s Knicks game.
It is why the 144 days since have seemed to crawl by. It’s been 30 years since a Knicks season has not only been this filled with anticipation but also this festooned with expectation. We’ve endured two occasionally delightful but ultimately despondent baseball seasons since.
The Knicks have the same number of wins since May 31 as the Jets. And while the Knicks suffered a loss in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals to the Pacers that strafed the souls of the most fervent and truest believers every bit as much as that Denver debacle did for Giants fans, enough time has passed to soften those wounds.
Knicks fans would’ve signed up to start the season Aug. 1.
