An Olympic hero added some more gold to her trophy case, “The Lioness” no longer sleeps, and what once was a women’s MMA dream fight is now a reality.

As much as Saturday night was a coronation for Kayla Harrison, at last a UFC champion after her one-sided, second-round submission victory over Julianna Peña in the UFC 316 co-main event at Prudential Center, her big moment was the appetizer before the hearty meal: the long-anticipated fight against legendary, recently unretired Amanda Nunes.

“Listen to me: This is the greatest fighter of all time,” said Harrison, who greeted Nunes with a friendly hug upon her entry into the octagon, after forcing Peña to tap out via kimura. “For a long time, I’ve said I want what she has. I have the belt. She has the legacy. Let’s put it on the table.”

The biggest women’s fight since Nunes bested Cris Cyborg in 2018’s epic, 51-second battle of the GWOATs is finally on the menu. Time to savor the buildup to come between former friends and training partners who rank high among the greatest female martial artists ever.
