The NBA season is just getting underway, but it already has featured eye-opening surprises — both good wows and bad wows — throughout the league.

Teams that were supposed to be tanking for teen sensation Victor Wembanyama have been winning their games, and several of those expected to be contenders can’t get out of their own way.

LeBron James and the Lakers probably don’t fit into either of those two categories — would-be tankers or contenders, that is — but the mission of getting back to the playoffs following last season’s whiff isn’t looking promising for the disjointed 2020 league champs.

And in New York, a steady Jalen Brunson already seems to have had the desired calming influence on the wayward Knicks while the star-heavy Nets have faltered with a rusty Ben Simmons still feeling his way in Brooklyn after more than a full year on the sidelines.
