MLB playoff viewers will hear a familiar voice in the divisional series
Bob Costas will return to the broadcast booth for his first full MLB postseason series since 2000, calling the ALDS between the Yankees and Guardians.
For Costas, who will be on the call alongside Ron Darling and sideline reporter Lauren Shehadi, it will mark his first full series since the Yankees-Mariners ALCS 22 years ago. In the interim, the 70-year-old Queens native called select postseason games over the past few years for MLB Network, and signed with Turner to host last season’s NLCS studio show.
Bob Costas is making his return to the MLB playoffs for a full series. AP PhotoHe also called a number of games for TBS during the 2022 regular season.
“I’m really excited about the prospect of doing an entire series instead of parachuting in for a single game,” he told The Athletic. “We used to do one game in each series, alternating National League and American League, for MLBN. We’d come in for Game 2 or Game 3, and that was fine. But you didn’t have the full narrative of the series.”
The broadcast legend is embracing the narrative perks of a full series.
“It allows you to get into a rhythm, he said. “It isn’t quite like playing, but it’s the closest thing to it. You remember every pitch.”
Costas will also serve as TBS’ studio host for the 2022 ALCS after his time in the booth.
