No disrespect to the concrete jungle of Manhattan, but the borough of Brooklyn is certainly the place to be these days.

First, professional baseball made its glorious return for the first time since the Dodgers left town after the 1957 season. After 44 years of patience, Brooklyn natives were rewarded when the Cyclones, a Class-A affiliate of the Mets in the New York-Penn League, took the field.

Now, after a 50-year hiatus, professional boxing is back in town with tomorrow night’s fights at Coney Island’s KeySpan Park, home of the Cyclones.

Super lightweights Hector “Macho” Camacho Jr. and Jesse James Leija will headline a talented card which includes Brooklyn native Paul Malignaggi’s professional debut.

Lost in all the excitement of the event is the awaited bout between heavyweights Larry Donald and Kirk Johnson. The winner will become the top contender in the WBA and receive a title shot against the winner of the Evander Holyfield-John Ruiz title bout in China. Holyfield and Ruiz will meet Aug. 5, for a third and decisive time, after splitting their first two contests.

Ironically, Johnson could have already been wearing a belt by now, actually two of them.

According to Johnson (31-0, 23 KOs), an offer was made to fight then champion Lennox Lewis in South Africa, but Johnson turned it down, disappointed over his share of the purse.
