BREEDERS’ CUP BOOST
The Breeders’ Cup has undergone its biggest shakeup since first being run in 1984, adding three $1 million races to the previous eight-race lineup, and expanding to two days, effective with this year’s Breeders’ Cup scheduled for Monmouth Park.
The three new races are the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, for 3-year-olds and up; the Filly & Mare Sprint; and the Juvenile Turf, at a mile on grass open to 2-year-olds of both sexes.
Those three races, along with three other Breeders’ Cup-funded stakes with purses of $250,000, will be run on Friday, Oct. 26. The traditional eight Breeders’ Cup races will be run on Saturday, Oct. 27, as originally planned.
