Eddie Royal became the first player in Broncos history to return a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in the same game, leading undefeated Denver to a wild 34-23 win at San Diego last night.

The Broncos (6-0) didn’t get an offensive touchdown until Kyle Orton threw a 19-yard pass to tight end Tony Scheffler late in the third quarter for a 24-23 lead. Denver added a field goal by Matt Prater and a late five-yard touchdown catch by Brandon Stokley that was upheld on review.

Denver outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil had two sacks to extend his NFL lead to 10. His second sack caused Philip Rivers to fumble, with Vonnie Holliday recovering to set up Prater’s 29-yard field goal. The Broncos sacked Rivers five times, three in the fourth quarter.

REDSKINS — Coach Jim Zorn announced yesterday the front office “strongly suggested” that he yield his play-calling duties to Sherm Lewis, who was hired as a consultant only two weeks ago.

Zorn received the news in a meeting with front-office chief Vinny Cerrato at the stadium following Sunday’s 14-6 loss to the previously winless Chiefs.

BILLS — QB Trent Edwards requires further evaluation after sustaining the second concussion of his NFL career when he was knocked out in the second quarter of a 16-13 overtime win at the Jets on Sunday.

SEAHAWKS — Linebacker Lofa Tatupu may not be out for the season after all. Further tests on the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker’s pectoral muscle indicated a partial tear rather than a complete one.

CARDINALS — Wideout Anquan Boldin is questionable for Sunday night’s game at the Giants because of a sprained right ankle.

BENGALS — Defensive end Antwan Odom will miss the rest of the season because of a torn right Achilles tendon.
