CBS Sports executives hope to extend Dick Enberg’s contract at the network.

This issue came into some question when CBS signed James Brown to host its “NFL Today” pre-game show, which pushed Greg Gumbel into the No. 2 play-by-play position at the network.

Enberg, 71, will be dropped down one slot to the No. 3 team. CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus said yesterday that executives have had discussions with Enberg’s representatives about a contract extension.

Besides the NFL, Enberg works on CBS’ March Madness and U.S. Open coverage.

“This is not an effort to move Greg in and move Dick Enberg out,” McManus said.

Brown decided to leave Fox’ NFL studio for CBS because of his expanded role. Brown will call NCAA basketball for CBS, but won’t start that assignment until next season.

Since the news just broke last Friday, Fox has yet to really devise a plan on how it will replace Brown. There have been reports that Terry Bradshaw could just become the main host on the pre-game show, but as of right now it is speculation.
