Canarsie 18

Bayside 15

Kendell Wilson had a hard time getting over last week’s loss to Sheepshead Bay in Canarsie’s regular season finale.

The running back was held to an uncharacteristic 66 yards and without a score as the Chiefs got spanked.

“He felt he cost us the game,” Canarsie coach Mike Camardese said. “He didn’t think he contributed at all.”

While Wilson was far from the only culprit last week, he made up for his play yesterday in the first round of the PSAL playoffs as he and QB John Harvey helped the third-seeded Chiefs avoid an upset to beat No. 14 Bayside, 18-15. Canarsie advanced to face No. 7 August Martin next week in the quarterfinals.

“I didn’t play my best last week,” said Wilson, who finished with 96 yards on 20 carries yesterday and added a six-yard TD reception from Harvey in the second quarter. “But that’s all in the past now.”

The Chiefs didn’t make it look easy. Canarsie (8-1) had a 12-7 lead at the half and it remained that way until Miguel Reyes appeared to put the game away with an 8-yard run with 4:00 left to play that gave Canarsie an 18-7 lead. But the Commodores (3-6), who had gained just three first downs after the early score, responded with Kanu Simpson hitting Andre Lewis for an 81-yard TD pass. Williams scored on a two-point conversion to make it 18-15 with 3:31 left.

“I knew we were still in control,” said Harvey, whose 185 passing yards would have been much more without a few drops. He found Kevin Lawrence on an 81-yard TD in the first quarter to make it 7-6.
