‘COUPLE’ CAPTURES RUNYON
Just week after Joe Lostritto saddled 2-year-old NY-bred filly Home and Away to win East View at 10-1 under Jose Espinoza, trainer and jockey struck again in state-bred stakes at Big A, $75,000 Damon Runyon for 2-year-old colts at mile-and-sixteenth, with 16-1 Platinum Couple. Lead changed hand several times from far turn home as Surfing Ian yielded to Stolen Thunder top of lane, then Building New Era rallied to run down Stolen Thunder mid-stretch, but couldn’t hold off late charge of Platinum Couple – who, like Home and Away, broke maiden in prior start.
Yesterday’s other stakes, $65,000 Twist Afleet, also went to longshot. Grecian Wings, 32-1, claimed by mid-Atlantic-based trainer Michael Trombetta at Saratoga for 50G, sat perfect trip tucked in behind speed duel under Pablo Fragoso. When Popular Decisions put away Slew Motion turning for home, Grecian Wings swung out, kicked in, to win going away.
* Eibar Coa rode four winners yesterday to tie Mike Luzzi for lead at meet with 14, but Coa will be stuck on that number at least until after Christmas as today he begins seven-day suspension for careless riding through Dec. 18, when Aqueduct goes on nine-day break.
THIRD RACE: Rum Ridge, was 4-5 choice under Eibar Coa coming off 12 1/4-length romp; pressed pace set by Blue Forest, cruised to front around turn, kicked clear under vigorous hand ride. Contrition, Pulpit filly making first start since Sept., just second start since Feb., with apprentice Channing Hill up, tracked pace well off rail, chased Rum Ridge around turn, down stretch, was nipped late for second by Mint Landing. After wire, Contrition collapsed and lay motionless for several minutes, seemingly victim of heart attack, then she suddenly rose like Lazarus and walked into horse ambulance, exhausted but otherwise OK. Hill, to his credit, stood by stricken filly until she got up.
