Johnny Damon lost a grand slam to a video review in the seventh inning, then hit a game-ending home run in the ninth that lifted the Rays over the Mariners 8-7 yesterday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Damon connected for a leadoff shot in the ninth on the first pitch from Dan Cortes (0-2), sending his 11th homer of the season into the right-field seats.

The Rays trailed 5-4 in the seventh when Damon launched a drive to right-center field. It was first ruled a home run, but the umpires changed the call to a three-run double.

Red Sox 6, Royals 1

In Kansas City, Mo., Jon Lester curbed the Royals on three hits for six-plus innings and Jason Varitek tripled for the first time in more than four years as the Red Sox were victorious.

Tigers 8, Indians 7

In Detroit, center fielder Austin Jackson threw out Kosuke Fukudome at the plate to complete a game-ending double play and the Tigers held on to beat the Indians in a wild game.

Blue Jays 1, Athletics 0

In Oakland, Calif., Luis Perez pitched brilliantly in his first big league start, combining with Casey Janssen on a one-hitter, and Jose Bautista connected for his majors-best 36th home run to send the Blue Jays past the Athletics.

White Sox 10, Rangers 0

In Chicago, Gavin Floyd pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning, Brent Lillibridge and Alex Rios hit two-run homers and the White Sox romped past the Rangers.

Angels 7, Orioles 1

In Anaheim, Calif., Jerome Williams pitched seven stellar innings to get his first major league victory in almost six years, Peter Bourjos homered for the third straight game and Howie Kendrick also went deep, leading the Angels past the bumbling Orioles.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Nationals 5, Phillies 4 (10)

In Washington, Ian Desmond hit a tying homer with two outs in the ninth inning, then Jonny Gomes was nicked by a pitch from Brad Lidge with the bases loaded in the 10th, giving the Nationals an unlikely win over the Phillies.

Cardinals 6, Cubs 2

In Chicago, Albert Pujols hit his 31st home run and Yadier Molina homered twice as the Cardinals beat the Cubs. Pujols had four hits and took the National League lead in homers. John Jay homered, doubled and scored twice for St. Louis.

Giants 6, Astros 4 (11)

In Houston, Pablo Sandoval hit a tie-breaking two-run homer with two out in the 11th inning to lead the Giants over the Astros.

Padres 4, Marlins 3

In San Diego, Nick Hundley tripled leading off the bottom of the ninth and scored on Will Venable’s bases-loaded single to give the Padres a four-game sweep of the Marlins.

Reds 5, Pirates 4

In Pittsburgh, the Reds sent Pittsburgh All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan to his second loss in three days, scoring twice in the ninth to beat the Pirates.

Rockies 5, Dodgers 3

In Denver, Kevin Millwood pitched seven strong innings for his first big league win in nearly a year and Seth Smith hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh, leading the Rockies past the Dodgers.

Braves 1, D’backs 0

In Atlanta, Tim Hudson combined with two relievers on a five-hit shutout, Alex Gonzalez homered and the Braves beat the slumping Diamondbacks to complete a three-game sweep.
