Jock captured the moment. Back in 1969 and ’70, Jock had a brief, fleeting romance with New York sports fans, a glossy magazine devoted to New York sports, featuring some heady bylines within its pages — Woody Allen, William F. Buckley, Paul Simon — and telling some remarkable New York stories at the apex of the city’s sporting power.

The November 1969 edition was unique: it had two covers. On one, there was Fran Tarkenton, QB1 for the Giants, with Joe Namath’s Fu Manchu mustache super-imposed on his upper lip, a Namathesque grin on his face. On the other was Namath, QB1 for the Jets, his shaggy lid given a photo-shopped trim, his own face a serious Tarkentonian mask.

“Should Fran Be More Like Joe?” asked the headline on one cover, “Or (see back cover) …”
