In another universe, a few years down the road, a second captain who roamed the left side of the infield for years in New York would be sitting where Derek Jeter was Wednesday afternoon, in Cooperstown for his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

A sea of blue and orange would have replaced the waves of pinstripes and chants of “Der-ek Jeter” would have been swapped for “Dav-id Wright.”

Wright was on that track — until his body betrayed him.
