DEAN’S-LIST EFFORT
Jets Report Card
QUARTERBACKS A
Chad Pennington (11-of-19, 189 yards, 131.4 rating) completed eight of his last 10 passes for 141 yards and 2 TDs after a shaky start. Terrific comeback from the New England loss last week.
RUNNING BACKS A
Curtis Martin (19-115, 2 TDs, rushing, 1-13 receiving) and LaMont Jordan (14-115, 1 TD rushing, 1-21 receiving) displayed textbook one-two punch. Great block ing from FB Jerald Sowell.
WIDE RECEIVERS A
Finally, the wide receivers became a bigger part of the offense, with Justin McCareins (3-56, 1 TD) catching his first TD as a Jet, and Wayne Chrebet (2-41, 1 TD, 1 dropped TD) catching his first TD pass since the beginning of last season.
TIGHT ENDS A
Anthony Becht (1-5) and Chris Baker (1-1, 1 TD) were a factor in the passing game, but an even bigger factor block ing for the run.
OFFENSIVE LINE A
C Kevin Mawae, LT Jason Fabini, LG Jonathan Goodwin, RT Kareem McKenzie and RG Pete Kendall across the board were magnificent.
DEFENSIVE LINE A
DE John Abraham (three tackles, one sack) ran after Miami QB Jay Fiedler like a man possessed. NT Jason Ferguson had perhaps the second-best game of his career.
LINEBACKERS A
Jonathan Vilma led the way with nine tackles and a half-sack. Eric Barton (3 tackles, half-sack) was all over the Miami running game.
SECONDARY A
Finally, a big play from S Reggie Tongue, who set the tone with a forced fumble and recovery, which led to the Jets’ first TD. S Jon McGraw had 8 tackles and an INT.
SPECIAL TEAMS A
Jonathan Carter averaged 26 yards on two KO returns. Coverage was strong, not letting Miami hurt the Jets on punts or KOs.
KICKING GAME A
Great job by K Doug Brien, who kicked a 49-yard FG with no time remaining in the first half and later booted a 43-yarder. P Toby Gowin was better, averaging 38.2 yards gross and 36.4 net.
COACHING A
Herman Edwards had his team as ready for this game as any this season. Great game called by Paul Hackett, while defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson had his players ravenous.
