Hosmer, a 2016 All-Star, began his MLB career with the Kansas City Royals and made his professional debut in May 2016. About two years later, he signed an eight-year, $144 million contract with the Padres.
The Padres are arguably the big winners of this year’s trade deadline, landing Nationals superstar Juan Soto. Hosmer was initially set to be included in the deal, but refused to waive his no-trade clause that would have sent him to Washington.
