FLORIDA vs. ALABAMA
SEC championship (in Atlanta)
4 p.m., CBS
LINE: Florida –51⁄2 • O/U: 41
EYES ON: Florida QB Tim Tebow; Alabama RB Mark Ingram
ANGLE: The game of the day. Check that, the game of the season. Not only are undefeated seasons and a trip to the BCS national championship game at stake, but the Heisman Trophy also might be decided.
Alabama has the better defense and Florida’s defense took a hit with the suspension of DE Carlos Dunlap after a DUI arrest. Tebow will need to put on his Superman cape one more time for the Gators (12-0) to eke out a win.
PREDICTION: Florida, 23-21
CINCINNATI at PITTSBURGH
Noon, ABC
LINE: Cincinnati –2 • O/U: 58
EYES ON: Cincinnati WR Mardy Gilyard; Pitt RB Dion Lewis
ANGLE: The Bearcats (11-0, 6-0 Big East) are looking to cap an undefeated season with a second straight BCS bowl. It could be the last game coach Brian Kelly is on the sidelines for Cincinnati. Notre Dame should come calling tomorrow.
The Panthers (9-2, 5-1) have the type of ball-control run game that can punish Cincy. But the Bearcats are too well-coached and create too many mismatches.
PREDICTION: Cincinnati, 34-31
WEST VIRGINIA at RUTGERS
Noon, ESPN
LINE: Rutgers –11⁄2 • O/U: 441⁄2
EYES ON: West Virginia RB Noel Devine; Rutgers DL Scott Vallone.
ANGLE: Tough position for the Scarlet Knights, but they have no one to blame but themselves. The loss to Syracuse KO’d a mid-tier bowl berth. The Gator Bowl is going to pair the Mountaineers against the Seminoles in a farewell to Bobby Bowden. This is the last season the Mountaineers still have a talent edge.
PREDICTION: West Virginia, 27-21
CLEMSON vs. GEORGIA TECH
ACC championship (in Tampa, Fla.)
8 p.m., ESPN
LINE: Georgia Tech –1 • O/U: 561⁄2
EYES ON: Clemson RB C.J. Spiller; Georgia Tech RB Jonathan Dwyer
ANGLE: Two future NFL star backs on the field. Spiller also can be a terror on returns. Tech coach Paul Johnson is too smart to kick to him. The Tigers have more speed and talent, but Tech has better schemes and is more consistent. No way the Tigers are going to prevent Tech from busting a couple of big, fat demoralizing runs. Ramblin’ Wreck wins the ACC crown.
PREDICTION: Georgia Tech, 41-31
NEBRASKA vs. TEXAS
Big 12 championship
(in Arlington, Texas)
8 p.m., ABC
LINE: Texas –141⁄2 • O/U: 461⁄2
EYES ON: Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh; Texas QB Colt McCoy
ANGLE: After Tebow and Ingram strut their stuff, McCoy gets the last chance to impress Heisman voters. There is no logical reason to believe the Huskers can win, unless there’s lousy weather and the roof to Jerry Jones’ new toy gets stuck.
The Longhorns haven’t forgotten the sting of last season’s Big 12 tiebreaking blunder. Longhorns sure showed some toughness beating Ohio State in last season’s bowl game. Texas scores late to cover, wins the Big 12 and meets the Alabama-Florida winner for the title.
PREDICTION: Texas, 41-20
