Al Groh doesn’t need Keyshawn Johnson around to like his team.

“So our team that we’re gonna take to Green Bay now is essentially set,” Groh said yesterday after paring his Jets roster to 57. “I like the composition of that team very much. I have high expectations for that team. And I think if we play the game the way that I want to play it, the way I picture our team performing, if our players execute to their talent level, I think we should have a team that goes out there every Sunday that should be hard to beat.”

What makes you like it? “I think it’s a pretty tough-minded team,” Groh said. “If you want a certain type of team, then you need to pay attention to those qualities in the individuals on an ongoing basis; if you want a tough-minded team you pick tough-minded guys. If you want a physical team you pick physical guys. You create a certain type of team by having certain type of individuals. I think it’s a team that will have dedication to winning that will keep them tuned in to, with the prodding by the head coach down through the assistant coaches, that it can be a team that understands that collectively, we can have no tolerance for the small things that cause teams to lose.”

Groh was asked if he felt the feeling-out process between him and the players was over. “I think I’m coaching the team today the same way I’m gonna coach it in five years; I just go out and coach it every day the way I think it needs to be coached,” Groh said. “I’ve said on a couple of other occasions, this has been my profession for 30 years and I’ve not only been in it, but I’ve studied it pretty hard on an ongoing basis. And I really kinda think at this point in my life, I should know what the head coach is supposed to do.”
