Two days after Gerrit Cole walked off the mound at Yankee Stadium due to left hamstring tightness, Jameson Taillon was placed on the IL on Thursday because of a left ankle injury.

Both blows were a reminder that the Yankees’ dreadful start to the season — and mediocre stretches throughout the first half — didn’t just leave them in bad shape in the standings, it also gave them little margin for error down the stretch.

With the Yankees flushing the benefit of their 13-game winning streak by playing poorly in its aftermath, they’ve also erased their ability to withstand costly injuries.
