Last week, we detailed how there is a changing of the headset happening in who will be calling the biggest games in the traditional four major sports. This week, we will evaluate how the first one up, Joe Davis, did as the successor to Joe Buck on Fox Sports’ coverage of the World Series.
1. Davis receives 4.11 out of 5 clickers for his work on the World Series. This is an excellent starting grade, which mostly can be attributed to him hitting the big calls.
2. It started in the NLCS. Davis was up to the moment as Bryce Harper gave Davis an opportunity for a call that will be judged over time. Davis put the right words on it — “Harper, the swing of his life” — and then got out of the way. Tremendous start.
3. In Game 3 of the World Series, Davis and Fox Sports had one of the best sequences in sports television history. Wait, how can you say that? Well, watch this clip and tell me how this could be broadcast or produced better? It is a Mona Lisa. Harper delivered again in his first at-bat in the first Phillies home game of the World Series.
