TAMPA — Will Warren and Clayton Beeter are shooting for more than Yankees rotation spots.

There is competition among the depth options for the Yankees rotation, but there is also competition between two of the organization’s best starting pitcher prospects over who is the better hunter.

After their Triple-A seasons ended last year, Beeter hosted Warren on a hunting trip in West Texas, an area of the state Beeter, a Fort Worth native, knows well from his Texas Tech days.

Beeter still has friends in Lubbock, including a few who run a guide service for hunting sandhill cranes, a migratory bird species that makes for fun hunting. At its best, hunting for sandhill cranes is “really action-packed,” Beeter said, hunters often shooting one after another rather than stalking an animal like a deer, hiding and “waiting and waiting and waiting.”
