Around this time last year, Oswald Peraza looked like the favorite to win the Yankees’ starting shortstop job in spring training.

Now? His Yankees future is as murky as ever.

With less than six weeks left until spring training, plenty can change about the Yankees’ roster. But as things stand now, Peraza is in line to be part of the Yankees bench to open the season, offering depth behind Anthony Volpe at shortstop, DJ LeMahieu at third base and Gleyber Torres at second base.

UPDATE: Contrary to what we originally wrote in this space Friday morning, Peraza actually does have one minor league option remaining. (A quick rundown: Though players typically get three option years after being added to the 40-man roster — which for Peraza came following the 2020 season before he was optioned in 2021, 2022 and 2023 — the infielder is eligible for a fourth option. Players who have not spent 90 days on an active major or minor league roster for five seasons can gain a fourth option, a category that Peraza falls into.)
