As it looks more likely with each passing day that the Islanders will remain status quo with Lou Lamoriello and Lane Lambert, the pressing business in front of the non-restructured front office must include treating Ilya Sorokin this summer the same way it did Mat Barzal last summer.
The questions about Barzal’s future entering the final season of his contract were rendered moot within a few days of the start of training camp when he agreed to an eight-year extension worth $73.2 million total, and those about Sorokin’s future should be greeted with the same swift action.
In building from the net outward, the Islanders are doing something rather unorthodox for today’s game.
The three Vezina Trophy finalists this season — Sorokin, Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck and Boston’s Linus Ullmark — were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
