IT’S ‘NAPOLEON’ DYNAMITE
RD RACE – Originally carded for a mile and three-eighths on the inner turf, this race was switched to a mile and an eighth on the main track and the field was reduced to five after scratches. After taking early money, Napoleon Solo was allowed to go off at 8-1 at post time. But despite the less than stellar performances in recent starts, Napoleon Solo won so easily that you could have bet the mortgage on him as Channing Hill confidently rode the Mary Cotter-trained gelding to victory. It was Hill’s second winner of the afternoon and, despite earlier reports, Hill will remain to ride at Belmont Park for the rest of the meet.
TH RACE – For the second time in as many racing days, Cornelio Velasquez and Juan Ortiz combined to win a race at Belmont. This time, Velasquez got My Big Treasure to run down the rank pacesetter Strong Case and then draw away for the victory. Telespeedy and Say I Do were both eased on the far turn while third place finisher Dominickthedonkey pulled up after the wire. Telespeedy and Dominickthedonkey were both vanned off. Say I Do had to wait for the horse ambulance to return to get him but he was able to walk back to the barn area before the ambulance arrived to get him.
TH RACE – For Barbaro fans, they hope Edgar Prado doesn’t get trapped in the Preakness as he did in this race. Prado, aboard 4-5 favorite Carmandia, rated patiently behind horses, waiting for the stretch drive to angle outside and draw away for the victory. But Cornelio Velasquez, aboard the diminutive La Chiflota, started to make her run from last with an outside move. Turning for home, La Chiflota was outside the favorite and kept her trapped inside, forcing her to check behind the tiring speed and lose momentum. La Chiflota then took the lead and by the time Carmandia got outside for her run, she couldn’t regain her momentum and catch La Chiflota before the wire. It was Cornelio’s second win of day.
TH RACE – Kelly K’s Pleasure is another one of those horses that as an owner you love, but as a bettor you hate. Coming into this race, she was 1 for 16 but she has finished worse than fourth only once in her career. She was also entered to race in Thursday’s feature race, but Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens elected to run her here. She was sent off the 8-5 favorite and she teased everyone again, making her threatening outside run but then flattening out to be second for the eighth time in 17 starts.
