Continuing to add to what figures to be a highly competitive training camp, the Giants yesterday signed safety Calvin Spears, one of the better players this past season in NFL Europe.

Spears, 22, is a 6-foot, 195-pounder from Grambling who had 34 tackles and three interceptions as the starting free safety for the Frankfurt Galaxy. He spent last year’s training camp with the Browns. Spears also was a top special teams player for Frankfurt.

Spears was a Division 1-AA honorable mention All-America in 2001. He finished his career at Grambling with six interceptions for 66 yards.
