VERO BEACH – Bob Watson, baseball’s new dean of discipline, didn’t sound yesterday like a man ready to march Mike Piazza into the slammer and throw away the key.

“From what I’m told, there weren’t any warnings or ejections, but I can’t really comment on it until I read the umpires’ reports,” Watson said by phone.

Had Piazza charged the mound, he would have been facing disciplinary action. He was composed enough to avoid doing that and furious enough to get in Guillermo Mota’s face an inning after the wild Dodgers right-hander plunked him with a pitch.

“I’ll rely on my eyes and ears on the field and I might even talk to both managers,” Watson said. “Until I do all that, I can’t really comment.”
