Following every game — including Tuesday’s 133-120 victory over the Grizzlies — Mike Brown steps to the microphone and starts his monologue.

No questions from reporters. Just an uninterrupted few minutes of the coach’s thoughts on what has transpired. We often hear about sprays (drive-and-kicks), and whether Brown was satisfied by the amount. There are never too many. We also hear about pace. The Knicks can’t play quick enough. And if they win, Brown makes sure to start a sentence with, “Our defensive player of the game is …”

The public announcement is after a ceremony in the locker room for the recipient, unique to this season and intended to promote both motivation and smiles.

“One of our values is joy,” Brown explains. “One of our principles or rules is to have fun. If you’re gonna preach something or say something, you gotta be about it. We try to find different ways to find that joy or to try to help our players have fun, because the season can be long and it can be monotonous.
