John Sterling suffered a heart attack last month but is doing well now, the former Yankees radio broadcaster revealed Sunday afternoon.

Sterling made the surprise announcement while appearing on WFAN during a conversation with Rickie Ricardo.

The former radio voice of the Yankees said that he was “very fortunate” and that “all things are good.”

“Everything is, I say, good. For people who don’t know, there isn’t any reason to hide it — at the beginning of January — I had a heart attack, and that’s fine; the heart is fine,” Sterling said. “Sometimes, it affects your legs and has affected my legs. So I’m kind of waiting for the force to leave my legs and I can get back out there. I’m very fortunate. All things are good, and it’s great to be on with you.”

During the appearance, Sterling said that his four kids had been doing a “sensational” job of taking care of him since the heart attack.

Sterling had an upbeat attitude while talking about what happened and spoke about how sports have helped him while he’s rested.

“Isn’t it great to be a sports fan?” he said. “Here I am kind of laid up in bed a lot, and the Winter Olympics were great.”

Sterling retired from the broadcast booth in 2024 after 36 years as the voice synonymous with Yankees baseball for an entire generation of fans.

He returned that fall to call the Yankees’ playoff run, which ended in the World Series with a loss to the Dodgers.

“I miss meeting with all the other broadcasters and writers and people behind the scenes,” Sterling said in an appearance on WFAN’s “Evan & Tiki” show after it was announced he would come back. “I kind of miss that. And I’ll tell you what I really miss is broadcasting with Suzyn [Waldman], who is such a fabulous partner and we were together for so long. This will give me a chance at a last hurrah and [to] work with Suzyn again.”

Sterling had been hosting a weekend show on news-talk station 770 AM WABC since last April, but podcasted episodes of his program only ran updates through the end of December.
