Al Leiter doesn’t believe Mike Piazza was unhappy last season, but the Met pitcher wants to talk to his batterymate as soon as possible.
Leiter is like everybody else – mostly in the dark about what Piazza is thinking and feeling.
“No, I haven’t talked to him,” Leiter said before Keith Hernandez’s Field of Dreams benefit for Alzheimer’s at the Hilton New York last night. “Mike’s kind of hard to get a hold of, even if you’re his teammate and even if you have all his numbers.”
Leiter was as curious as Met fans about reports that the 10-time All-Star wanted out. Piazza’s father, Vince, denied the reports in Sunday’s Post. It is believed Piazza and his agent still haven’t sat down face to face with the Mets to bury the rumor for good and discuss next season.
“With all that’s gone down, I’m curious,” Leiter said. “After all, I do locker next to the guy.”
Leiter has been closely following the off-season rumors, including the rumblings that Alex Rodriguez wants out of Texas and wouldn’t mind becoming a Met.
“If I had a wish list, he would be on it,” Leiter said. “Why is it shocking news [that he wants out]?
“The guy has been on a team that hasn’t won. After a while, all the money in the world doesn’t matter. When you lose, it becomes part of your demeanor.”
Leiter was asked if he’d be surprised if Piazza was playing in a different uniform next season, and he said yes. He said he’d also be surprised if A-Rod was with the Mets. Still, he downplayed his thoughts.
“Opinions are opinions – they really don’t matter,” he said. “I would be surprised, but what does that mean?”
In other Mets news, John Franco also attended the banquet but said there was no update on his negotiations with the Mets.
“It’s in the early stages,” Franco said. “It’s in the hands of my agent and [general manager Jim] Duquette. We’ve been on the same page all along.
“Hopefully, it will work out. I’m going to pitch next year, but I can’t assume what other teams are thinking.”
