A team doesn’t get far, certainly not to the promised land of championships, without the utmost in confidence. The belief that any opponent can be beaten any time, any place, is paramount.

Although it is barely mid-June, the Liberty (3-2) face a challenge today that could prove crucial in August, when the WNBA playoffs are reaching their peak. The Los Angeles Sparks are the two-time reigning league champs by virtue of their sweep of the Liberty in last year’s finals.

Lisa Leslie & Co. come to the Garden today for a 4 p.m. tipoff. Before the Liberty can think about beating L.A. in the playoffs, they have to show they can win in the regular season.

“I think it’s important we come out early today and make a statement,” said swingman Vickie Johnson. “They’re the best team in the league and they’re on a roll.”

Are they ever! The Sparks bring a gaudy 8-0 record into this game. An L.A. win would match the league record of a 9-0 start already held by the Sparks. Leslie is considered the best women’s player in the world; she is a prettier, more fit Shaq.

“They are the best team and she is the best player,” said Liberty coach Richie Adubato. “Usually that’s enough to motivate a team. But the team that loses in the championship, that’s the team that’s really motivated.”

It will take more than motivation. The Liberty will have to box out the taller Sparks, and starting point guard Teresa Weatherspoon, who is determined to play through painful knees, must have a solid game.
