So much for a battle.
The Fordham Rams were sent on the longest four-mile bus ride of their lives last night after being humiliated by Manhattan, 81-47, at a sold-out Draddy Gymnasium in the 104th Battle of The Bronx.
It was the Jaspers’ third straight win and eighth victory over Fordham in their past 11 meetings
Manhattan (6-4, 2-0) dominated from the opening shot, as junior guard George Beamon scored the game’s first eight points, hitting two 3-pointers, to jump-start the Jaspers to a lead they would never relinquish. Beamon finished with a game-high 15 points, one of five Jaspers in double figures.
Manhattan’s Bronx-bred freshman forward, Emmy Andujar, took home the game’s MVP honors, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
“We want to be the most unselfish team there is and play the hardest,” Manhattan’s first-year head coach Steve Masiello said. “They get more happiness out of seeing other guys do well. That’s a credit to what they stand for and what they believe in.”
Manhattan was aggressive from the start, utilizing a full-court press which helped cause eight first-half turnovers from Fordham freshman point guard Devon McMillan,.
Fordham (3-4, 0-0) trailed 20-10 with just under 12 minutes left in the first half and put together a 7-0 run. But the Rams were immediately hit by an 8-0 run that helped give Manhattan a 36-25 lead at halftime.
The Rams never got within single digits again, surrendering a 24-5 second-half run that sent the deficit to 38.
“Obviously, I didn’t have our guys prepared to match their intensity,” Fordham head coach Tom Pecora said.
