KNICK NOTES
PORTLAND – Through two Knick knee operations, Nick Van Exel was there for Antonio McDyess, always calling him, always encouraging him.
The Golden State point guard, whom the Knicks face tonight in Oakland, is one of McDyess’ dear friends, dating to their Denver days.
“He definitely went through everything I went through,” McDyess said. “We’ve been close ever since we were teammates.”
It’s little wonder McDyess has always hoped the Knicks’ trade talks with Dallas last season and the Warriors this season came to fruition.
“I’d love to be his teammate again,” McDyess said. “But that’s out of my control. If I could play on his team again, I’d love it.”
Before training camp, reports had Van Exel, who’s been on fire coming off the bench after returning four games ago from knee problems, as being unhappy. The Warriors refuted it, but McDyess isn’t so sure his buddy wouldn’t mind a change of scenery.
“He’s just playing ball, not thinking about trades,” McDyess said. “Is he happy? I don’t know. We haven’t talked about it in a while but he’d definitely want to play in New York.”

Michael Sweetney can’t help but check out his first-round brethren’s playing time. Sweetney, the ninth overall pick, is on the injured list, demoted after McDyess was activated Monday.
“I notice that,” Sweetney said. “But all teams are different. Some teams have different theories about rookies. I have to keep working hard and plugging and hopefully it will pay off. They’ve always told me I have to keep working and earn your share of time.”
He’s coping, but doesn’t sound thrilled with the situation. “Anybody would want to dress and get a chance to play but I guess it’s a process you have to go through,” Sweetney said.
When Knicks visit Oakland tonight, Warriors will wear golden 1967 jerseys to honor the 40-year anniversary of Bay Area move.
Don Chaney said he’s not cringing every time McDyess trips or lands awkwardly.
“Not anymore,” Chaney said. “I was a little scared early on, thinking about it a lot when he made quick moves. I don’t worry about him getting hurt anymore.”
